Scones – SPRO -Berlin

The news from across the pond may not be the best as of late, but here in Berlin the food news is worth repeating. One of the best British foods to ever make its way elsewhere, scones, well, there is not a bad word to say about the ones from SPRO. Located in Prenzlauer Berg on the Shönhauser Allee, I happened upon it on a morning stroll. Lulled in by the beautiful scone display in the window, plus having time to sit, savor and sip my tea before heading to class, I had to give it a try. Freshly clotted cream, homemade jam (’twas quite good), and a freshly baked scone.

Scone from the heart.

Jonathan Oekten comes to Berlin by way of Canada. Little roundabout, but he has been here for a few years working in the restaurant industry. This is his first sole venture. The decor is crisp, clean and contemporary. The scones are based on the ones he ate as a child that his mother made. It’s so great when chefs share food that is this close to their heart. You can feel it in the scone. Really, I swear you can.

Contemporary and cozy.

Strategically placed in the front window, you cannot miss the golden brown goodies, made fresh daily. Some have raisins, some are plain, some have berries, yum. The displays are simple and engagingly attractive. Scones are piled high on stands under glass cloche lids. Homemade cookies are displayed on the counter.

When I stopped in, Jonathan had opened only a short time before. Other than awaiting the permanent menu signs, SPRO felt like a member of the neighborhood. Service was rapid, the tea was piping hot and I felt like I might stay all morning. WIFI is free, a key element for a breakfast place as far as I am concerned. Unless you have a dining partner, you may want to just nibble your scone, surf and have a coffee or two. Bring a well-charged phone, or unpack your iPad.

Not feeling it for a scone, the case in front is filled with fresh cakes, yogurt/muesli/fruit cups and juice. Cappuccino, Kaffee Macchiato, name your coffee, they can prepare it. Even if you do try something else, throw in a scone, the clotted cream and fresh jam will make your day.

Scones can be eaten any time of day.

And when I checked their instagram, it looks like they are serving lunch as well. I guess I have to go, again!
